Checking motors

The pictured boat comes with 2 1960 Evenrude 35520 40 hp motors with unknown history. Said to have run 3-5 years ago . The windshield might fit my 58 CRESTILNER BUCCANEER 15 SPEEDSTER, also has nice bow and stern light and period controls. What look for on motors and is it safe to turn over motors out of water to check compression $300- 375 for boat, trailer and motors. Cranking it over dry may damage the water pump impeller.  But it probably needs replacing after 5 years anyway.

boat and engine look clean …indicating  care… if the comp is ok    I would go for it. but… it may be my eyes…check transom…seems bent out of shape (round in the middle ??? …make certain it is sound or look at it as a long term fix project .

transom can be rebuilt and reglassed.   lots of utubes

trailer looks solid …. probably needs new bearings… easy fix    ….engine wise  just be prepared to  buy lots of fuel 🙂    Common magneto… easy to  service

it is a 1960 but  the johnson red book can help you  along to  service the engine .

300 to 375 would be a good deal on the windshield only.  I paid 45o plus 125 shipping for a custom windshield for my old Cherokee runabout.

You might open the drain plug on the gearcase and see what comes out – dirty oil, water, chocolate milkshake (water and oil mix), rust, maybe no oil at all.     If the gear oil looks totally clean and fresh, it might be a sign there’s a problem they are trying to hide by filling it up to make it look good.

First thing I’d ask is ,do boat and trailer have valid titles ?

thanks for info will take a large bucket with me to fill with H2O, will replace impeller anyway if I buy it.

Pretty much just needing the parts from boat and will have a free hull for someone thats interested. Trailer is roadable and both have titles. Thanks for reply
