I just picked up a couple of cases for folding 3HP Evinrudes/Johnsons, the plastic ones from the mid-to-late 60s. They have the usual amount of dirt and grime on them, along with some residue from long forgotten stickers. Any suggestions for how to clean these up without removing/affecting the paint?

      Thanks.

I’ve never seen one, but are they painted, or is it gel coat over fiberglass? If I knew this, the sailer in me would know what to do!

Hot soap and water (laundry or dish detergent) should remove the oily grime. Goof Off is great for removing old sticky residue and other stuff and shouldn’t harm the paint.

You bought those at Suter’s didn’t you? You got the best two cases. I had to settle for the third case. Dish soap and water or blue Easy Off oven cleaner do a great job on grease and oil. Goof Off is excellent for stickers. I use it all time.

I believe these are ABS plastic cases. In which case you can use most anything to clean them so long as it isn’t a hydrocarbon, or an organic solvent (acetone, toluene, xylene, etc)
My personal favorite is something ammonia based.

If the color has yellowed, I’ve got a pretty slick solution for that.

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t use the cases as a carrying case. That plastic fatigues pretty badly with time and UV exposure.

                Yep, I did. 😳

If it’s any consolation, I have been looking for two cases for about 4 years, when I acquired two folding motors………

I have fantastic luck using Zep Orange Cleaner. It is terrific for removing heavy grease build up and ground in dirt and it has never damaged any surfaces I have used it on. I have used it on a number of vintage motors with original paint and it cuts right through the built up grease and the oily exhaust stains. It so tough that it is a great oven cleaner, too.

Available at Home Depot and Canadian Tire in Canada. I am quite sure that Home Depot in the US carries it, too. I DO NOT work for Zep, home Depot, or Canadian Tire, by the way 😆

I frequently use "LA’s Totally Awesome". Dollar General and probably all such stores have it in a 16 oz spray bottle for $1. Also have a larger pour bottle for $3. No acid, ammonia or bleach, and non-flammable. We buy the large bottles and pour it into a pump sprayer for our engines. Spray, let sit for a few minutes, pressure wash. Does a great job. Not sure about decal compatibility – be careful. Cheers, JW in Dixie
