I just picked up a couple of cases for folding 3HP Evinrudes/Johnsons, the plastic ones from the mid-to-late 60s. They have the usual amount of dirt and grime on them, along with some residue from long forgotten stickers. Any suggestions for how to clean these up without removing/affecting the paint?
Thanks.

October 28, 2015 at 1:19 am #26166I believe these are ABS plastic cases. In which case you can use most anything to clean them so long as it isn’t a hydrocarbon, or an organic solvent (acetone, toluene, xylene, etc)
My personal favorite is something ammonia based. If the color has yellowed, I’ve got a pretty slick solution for that.
For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t use the cases as a carrying case. That plastic fatigues pretty badly with time and UV exposure.

If it’s any consolation, I have been looking for two cases for about 4 years, when I acquired two folding motors………

October 28, 2015 at 3:38 pm #26196I have fantastic luck using Zep Orange Cleaner. It is terrific for removing heavy grease build up and ground in dirt and it has never damaged any surfaces I have used it on. I have used it on a number of vintage motors with original paint and it cuts right through the built up grease and the oily exhaust stains. It so tough that it is a great oven cleaner, too.
Available at Home Depot and Canadian Tire in Canada. I am quite sure that Home Depot in the US carries it, too. I DO NOT work for Zep, home Depot, or Canadian Tire, by the way 😆

October 28, 2015 at 4:02 pm #26197I frequently use "LA’s Totally Awesome". Dollar General and probably all such stores have it in a 16 oz spray bottle for $1. Also have a larger pour bottle for $3. No acid, ammonia or bleach, and non-flammable. We buy the large bottles and pour it into a pump sprayer for our engines. Spray, let sit for a few minutes, pressure wash. Does a great job. Not sure about decal compatibility – be careful. Cheers, JW in Dixie
