I have a Clinton J7 5 hp model 10-13-7-0-4-5 outboard that I’m working on and have a question about the driveshaft/water pump area.I ordered a impeller and it fits on the driveshaft just fine but when I get down towards where it sits in the housing there is a 2 piece brass bushing on the driveshaft in the way.I reamed out the impeller to make it fit and ruined it by removing the bushing inside the impeller.I ordered another impeller but I don’t want to ruin this one.Should the 2 piece bushing be there? I can attach some photos to clarify.
I removed the sleeve.Had to heat the small piece I think it was brazed on.Now the impeller will fit.Just have to drill a hole for the impeller pin. Thanks for the advice!
Scotty – where did you find an impeller? Is it a substitution from Jabsco or Johnson Pumps, or a rebuilt one from Jim or Brian? I know the NOS ones can be very pricey, usually far more than the value of the motors. If there was a reasonably priced modern substitution, I’m sure people would love to know!
Jim Freshman has a web site (Jim’s Antique Air Cooled Engine Parts) and can get or have parts for the Clinton outboards.I got 2 needle valves, knobs and a fuel tank connector which are hard to find from him. Here is his email address jim@aircooledengpts.com.I think it is a substitution part. The cost was $29.95 plus shipping.
