I recently acquired a 1960-61 Clinton j-9. what is the correct mix ratio, and what kinda oil. I read somewhere that I should use chain saw oil. I use tcw3 on most all my small old motors at 16:1. Also on the fuel pump, does the plug on the bottom supposed to be tight? or is it adjustable for tension on the diaphragm spring and plate? Thanks for any help!
September 9, 2016 at 5:05 am #43657My old manual says to use 1/2 pint oil per gallon – calls for non-detergent SAE 30 wt or Outboard Motor oil. Since the block is air-cooled, I’d bet chain saw oil would work OK too. Along with TCW3.
As you surmised, the screw is there to adjust fuel pump outlet pressure (1-3 psi ). Normal setting will vary from flush to one screw thread showing, it says here.September 9, 2016 at 5:31 pm #43689Thanks for the info. After replacing the diaphragm I found my real problem was a check valve on the pump outlet fitting. It runs like a top!
September 9, 2016 at 10:13 pm #43701I’m not surprised. Most of the old Clintons I’ve run across would run well after a gentle nudge or two. I think people generally gave up on them early for lack of service availability. Wasn’t like you could just haul them down to the nearest Clinton dealer.
September 10, 2016 at 1:43 am #43715Mine runs well on 16:1, with TCW-3. I added some stick on foam insulation to the insides of the cowl to help cut the noise some. I think it helped a little (Lowes duct insulation, 1/4" thick with foil cover)

September 14, 2016 at 2:03 pm #44009Also, many don’t realize that the J9 has a waterpump impeller to keep the bottom bearing and leg cool. These impellers are often overlooked and it leads to the lower bearing getting fried pretty quickly.
I use air-cooled oil in the ones we have, 16:1. The fuel pump diaphragm is easily made from generic material – you can get it from McMaster Carr or Ollie G. has small sheets available: http://www.pfs-ware.com/Parts/OllieParts.htm It’s just a flat piece of material sandwiched between the two halves of the connector/pump assembly. Punch the 3 holes for the screws and trim the sides, you can make it in a couple of minutes.

September 15, 2016 at 12:59 pm #44069HI,
Just so you know my Husquvarna 255 rancher chain saw has a note in the owners manual that said "do not use outboard motor oil" guess they don’t think it is adequate.
