I can’t be the only person with this problem. I got a U.S. Coast Guard Capacity Information plate, made out of aluminum screwed into back of boat, well oxidized, very hard to read, can barely read it now. My question is How do you clean these plates without taking all the paint off, and making this plate worthless?.  I had other plates that I tried cleaning with Dawn soap, had good luck with some, not so on others.                                                                                         Thanks, Gene.

In addition to OP’s question.  Is there any way to have these plates remade?  Mine is so worn as to make some of it as thin as aluminum foil with holes worn through it.  I’d like to just have a new one made and install it when I do the overhaul.

After talking to Lowe,I took a few measurements and they made me a new one.

I run across numerous sources on-line for ordering replacement Capacity tags.  You furnish the information and they make you a tag.

Here’s one of them but there are many many more:

A local trophy shop makes new or reproduction tags using plastic or aluminum and one in your area might be able to do the same.

Obviously, nobody cleans these plates anymore, looks like I’ll have to look at these company’s that make these plates, too bad we can’t clean or repair these plates anymore, instead of throwing everything away.                                   Thanks, Gene.
