Any grease is better than no grease at all. So use the triple guard applied only to the splines, not on top of the driveshaft. Removing the gearcase every few years is always good service practice, especially in salt water areas. Please be sure to check/replace that driveshaft oring as well, this will help keep the grease in place. Don’t try to substitute this oring with off the shelf stuff. Probably better off leaving the original oring in place than trying to use a cheap replacement/substitute. The gearcases on these engines are a weak link for sure, so check and change the gear lube frequently. The engine puts a heavy load on that little gearcase, it will survive only if the lube stays clean and full. Low/contaminated lube will usually wipe out the pinion bushing and the driveshaft, and once this happens the gearcase is toast.
The other weak link on these engines are the wrist pin bushings. Undersized wrist pins and bushings can get worn quickly, especially at constant high RPM. I know the factory mix is 24:1, which is fine. I mix mine at 16:1 though, with the hopes that wrist pin bushing life might be extended.
