I found this motor on Craigslist and it looks cool but I am a newbie and I don’t know what it is exactly, but I know it’s not worth the asking price.
It’s right in my back yard so I thought I might try to haggle with the guy but I would like some help filling in the information gaps 🙂

Can someone tell me some more about it? What year it is, HP, etc.? That will help me do some research on it before I call the guy.

I assume it’s like every other vintage outboard of this era and is worth about 100-150 bucks, but I don’t know for sure. What would you guys offer to pay for it?

I appreciate any information you guys want to share, I’m all ears (eyes) 🙂

      Here’s the listing:

      Thanks for your time!

Well, I surely wouldn’t pay anywhere near that kind of money for that engine, even if it does run.
You mention being a "newbie", you would probably have a much easier time rejuvenating a mid 50s OMC 3-10hp, and could surely purchase one for $100.

Hi EYES AND EARS… if that’s the motor of your dreams; place a ‘WANTED’ ad on AOMCI’s Webvertise, and purchase the same one, for NO MORE than a hundred frog skins ! ! :O)

Looks like an Evinrude Ranger. To me it is priced extremely high.
If you are looking for a small engine to start out with, another recommendation for you would be any of the 3hp engines. Parts are plentiful and they run like watches.

What’s with the stained glass window? Seems like a strange combo. Wonder what that’s worth separately?

HAHA, this is why I love this hobby!–4 responses in less than an hour!

Is it the motor of my dreams? Not hardly.
                Is it cool? Absolutely!
Is it worth more than 100 dollars to me? No.–It’s BARELY worth 100 dollars to me.
Would I gladly give a member 100 dollars for one, if they had one to sell? YES! If someone has one and wants to part with it, let me know 🙂

I suppose I was just curious to see if this guy had some rare ‘unicorn’ that was worth somewhere near what he was asking. I may call the guy and ask him if he is willing to be reasonable.

                Thanks everyone!

Best prices are at aomci swap meets — motors like this one are a dime a dozen — well, not quite that cheap, but you know what I mean — you can find restorable classic era motors (roughly end of wwii thru 1970) for as little as $25

I would guess that it is an Evinrude ranger (1.1HP) or sportsman (2HP). It is in good shape but still not worth anything near what he is asking. Also it is not as old as he has stated i would guess that it is from the 1946-1948 era. looks a lot like my sportsman but with a standard lower unit unlike my weedless one. Here is a video of my sportsman running in "the big tank" if it helps you at all.

                      Not a Ranger.
                      Wrong lower unit.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

500 seems a bit high for a Sportsman so you’d definitely want to make an offer on it. Sometimes the deals come to you, such as this ’46 Sportsman came to me. It’s rough, it runs, but for twenty bucks I couldn’t say no!
