Motor price is off by a factor of ten. Should be $50, not $500.
Long live American manufacturing!
October 26, 2015 at 11:16 pm #26118I’d look for a Johnson JW series 3hp motor. They are reasonable, and plentiful. They run like a top after they have been serviced, and are very reliable. I prefer the 1952 through 1962 models because they have both an adjustable high and low speed jet.
Evinrude made their own carburators on those early motors. They can be finicky to say the least!
Good Luck.
bkrsdozOctober 27, 2015 at 12:29 pm #26136Yea, that is a 1946 Sportsman, from what I can see. Good little motors. I have a 1.5hp Sportsman (1948) a lot cheaper than that, if you’re interested. 😉
October 27, 2015 at 2:06 pm #26138Mr. Spock – Here is another way for you to go.
We are having an Antique Outboard meet in November in Clermont, Fl. This should not be too far for you to go since you are looking in the Treasure Coast Craigslist for an engine.
If you are interested in getting into this hobby this would be an excellent way to start, look at a bunch of engines, run some, and meet some of the folks on this forum.
If you are interested, just respond on here or PM me and I will get you the details on the meet. How ’bout that?
October 27, 2015 at 4:07 pm #26145Count me in! I’ll be there!
I went to the 50th anniversary meet and had a blast. I met some really cool people. How will this meet in November compare to that one? Same size? Smaller? Can I bring my 12 foot boat and 57 Evinrude?
Thanks again!

October 27, 2015 at 8:53 pm #26150Smaller! By a long shot. The 50th was an amazing event. Our monthly events are great and we normally have a pretty good turn out. The lake at Clermont is beautiful and there are cruising opportunities off of it as well. By all means bring your boat with you and enjoy the day. This event will give you the chance to meet the Florida bunch and place some names with faces you may have seen at Lake Shipp. Here is a link to the meet calendar. SWitch it to November and click on the listing to view details and a map. http://www.flaomci.com/calendar.html

I AM an addict!! 🙂 I want to buy them all. Even when I’m not tinkering with them or running them, I just enjoy looking at them. They’re all like art. The stuff they make today just has no style. Well, I suppose the new Evinrude G2 has it’s own style but it kinda looks like an angry storm trooper to me.
The old stuff has character and history. Sometimes I think it’s kind of fun to just imagine how happy some guy (or gal) was when they walked out of the dealership 50, 60, or 70 years ago with their new outboard. I can imagine how upset they got when it got its first scratch. I can imagine too how many really awesome fishing trips these old motors went on in their lifetimes. These old outboards are pieces of history and a look back at a much simpler time. Imagine what they would tell us if they could talk…or have I gone off the deep end? HAHARob

There is one thing you don’t have to imagine.
When you running a 50, 60, 70, or 90+ year
old motor your experiencing exactly what the
original owner did the first time and every time
he ran it. Its as close to going back in time as
you can get.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
