What is an indicator that the crankshaft seals are bad. Abnormal carburetor settings, poor low speed, poor hi speed, will not start, all of the above?

If the upper is bad, it generally will sling oil all over the points…

Depends on what motor you are talking about. Some, all of the above, some you will not see any symptoms till the whole powerhead is trashed from water intrusion into the crankcase.

Mumbles posted a You Tube video of what the bad top crankshaft seal looks like with outboard oil applied.

I was told by members here if u own a 1956 15 hp evinrude or Johnson and 1956 12 hp gale its best to replace the bottom crank seals as they are prone to failure

If the top seal is gone, the bottom one will probably need replacing to at the same time, especially if the motor has lip style seals instead of O rings.

I replaced the bottom seals on my 56 15 and 12 hp engines. Its not difficult at all.

How did you get the old ones out without damaging the crank surface?

The screw method works well but there are tools.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
