Hey all, long-time listener, first-time caller here. I have a 60’s Crestliner Voyager, the title says it’s a 63 but I’m not sure if that’s correct. I’ve owned the boat since 2015 and still use it frequently. It has a 1964 Mercury 650 short shaft engine that I’ve replaced the timing belt and water pump on since I’ve owned it. I love this boat and plan to keep it for some time, but I do have some issues with the Merc which brings me here seeking some advice. I consider myself to be pretty mechanically inclined but I’ve run into some roadblocks with the current engine. The lower unit leaks, I drain and replace the gear oil every other trip to the lake. I’d like to rebuild the carbs but last I checked I believe I have to remove the distributor to do so and that seems like I can of worms I don’t want to mess with. I’m concerned about parts availability and the special tools required to properly repair this engine. My long-term plans are to occasionally take this boat to Morehead City, NC a few times a year and I hate to put this classic engine in saltwater in it’s current state.
I know that there is a great depth of knowledge here on these older engines and am wondering if it’s worthwhile to track down all the tools and used components to keep this engine going or should I repower this boat? As for a repower I’m thinking any late model 60-70hp 3 cylinder Johnson/Evinrude. Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated.
Dan
