While out on a hunt I found this Crosely outboard motor in a shed , it is missing the shroud so no identification except the Crosely casting in the block , I know that the Homelite outboards used a Crosely block but all the pictures I can find show the flywheel on the top but this one has the flywheel on the bottom next to the outboard leg , has anyone seen one of these
I believe it’s a Fageol (spelling????). We called them a Fragile because there were so many parts to break when horsing them around by hand. Yeah, we eventually built a hoist.
It looks like a home made or maybe prototype Homelite outboard. You can look behind the distributor on the aluminum crankcase to see if there is a serial number stamped. That would tell if it was a Crosley car engine to begin with. You can go on the Crosley Club of America website and see the engine family tree and find out what it really is. I have several Crosleys and have been in the club since the early 70’s.
Peter Hunn’s The Old Outboard Book has about a full page on the history of the Fageol/Crofton/Homelite/Bearcat Outboards. Yep, they all started with the Fageol 44 35hp, a Crosley engine mounted on end on a Scott-Atwater lower unit. An inboard model was also produced.
The Homelite version mounted the engine other-end-up, flywheel on top. That reversed the engine rotation. I guess I’ve forgotten how that was dealt with.
