July 6, 2016 at 1:42 pm #39697Well being a Ducktwin does make it worth more. He says it ran when put up 2 years ago. Wonder where he put it?
July 6, 2016 at 2:27 pm #39698Agreed, the quacker does increase the value, but the condition isn’t up to the price tag in my book. I think he needs to find a better place to store it in the off season. 🙄

July 6, 2016 at 2:27 pm #39699Why do almost all old 3hp look like someone took a baseball bat to them?

Robbie RobertsonJuly 6, 2016 at 2:35 pm #39701I think it’s because the metal is very soft and there isn’t any good way to sit them down. They would tend to get toted around and taken on and off the boat more than the larger motors and they got thrown into a pile of camping gear once or twice a year for a couple of decades. They sure do get dented up and get to looking rough unless someone took exceptional care of it over the years. That’s my theory anyway. I could be totally off. Pugetsoundboater may be onto something there too…

July 6, 2016 at 4:58 pm #39708Evinrude’s previous three horse ( the 48 Sportwin – Irgie’s "outboard of the future") had an almost indestructible cast tank which increased the weight. So in order so save weight, they used stamped aluminum lower covers which bent easily and became difficult to install. Many covers were lost. Some experiments were tried using weight saving magnesium. ( Some of the Porsche race cars had magnesium transmissions. ) I got to play with some of the scraps. They made excellent flairs. (This came to a screeching halt when the back porch caught fire.) So the stamped aluminum gas tanks made the outboards lighter, but more vulnerable to abuse. . . . . 😀

July 6, 2016 at 5:36 pm #39710True enough…compare silver Kiekhaefer KD3/4 with KE3, KE4 which were nearly same ‘motor
with stamped aluminum tanks replacing cast aluminum tanks. You seldom see a dented cast aluminum tank or an undented stamped aluminum tank.
Louis. It is far easier to reseal a leaky cast aluminum tank than to undent a stamped aluminum tank.
July 6, 2016 at 7:13 pm #39715No, the three horse has a good way to set it down. Just as good as any other outboard. People are just careless about handling and transporting. Unfortunately the Lightwin is the biggest victim of this abuse.
And yes. This guy is a dreamer. You can actually buy any of my completely tuned and ready to run outboards, for less than that. 😀
