I have a 1956/57/58 (not sure which year exactly) Johnson 35 hp with a model number of 35531. It was built in Canada.
I just recently downloaded the Johnson “Red Book” and saw the chart for the 1958 Johnson 35 horse power with the following model #s: RD-19C, RDE-19C and RDS-20
Were there different model #s depending on which country the motor was built in?
The other issue I have is that this same motor is likely a mix of different parts. So the exterior plate states as above – Model # 35531 but on the interior part of the motor, the circular silver coin shaped plate shows a big M (from my research, it doesn’t appear to stand for Mercury) and the model number is 0385564.
any thoughts on identifying the year and make of the engine?

The squared M is OMC’s trademark. 385564 is the serial number. Probably a Canadian motor. Yes, Canadian and USA motors have different serial numbers.
35531 is an Evinrude 1962 40hp.
RD-19C is a rope start motor 1958
RDE-19C is an electric start motor 1958
RDS-20 is a 1958 Johnson Super Sea Horse (Super Quiet) 35hp-

October 4, 2021 at 4:12 pm #247686Thank you very much! This was very helpful to confirm that the engine is definitely different from the body of the motor.
October 4, 2021 at 4:16 pm #247687Thank you this is very helpful and confirms that the engine is different from the body of the motor. It looks like I have a 40hp engine in a 35 hp body. My guess is that the lower unit is probably different too.
Oh well, it runs really really well!
Thank you again!
October 5, 2021 at 7:54 am #247735I’ve had a few motors built in Peterborough — there have been slight differences — decals, for example.
Perhaps you do have a motor that was born with a powerhead mated to an odd-ball body.
frankr – were there Gale builds going on in Peterborough as late as ’62 ?
October 5, 2021 at 8:06 am #247737Thank you! Yeah the casing model # is completely different than the engine model #

1963 supposedly was the last year for Gale production, both US and Canada. However there were some strange happenings showing up even after that, which I can’t explain. Model numbers that don’t exist, for instance. Perhaps they had to make a few more motors to fill Ward’s purchase orders? Just conjecture on my part.
