Hi all
Just wandering if there are any differences between a 1956 5.5hp Johnson and a 1962 5.5hp Johnson apart from the pressure tank/ fuel pump, styling & cosmetics…
Did they both use the same powerhead and lower unit with no changes in carburettors or gearing in the lower unit? Were the reed valves etc. the same?I’m just wandering as at our meet yesterday one of the members brought his 1956 5.5hp Johnson and it ran beautifully, I have the option of purchasing a 1962 5.5hp and if there are no major differences between the two then I will probably get it…
Cheers

May 30, 2016 at 3:49 pm #37370I like the 1956 model, myself. The shrouding is a lot tougher and and there is better quality parts on it as well.
The needle bearing rod ends, is the ONLY improvement the later model has. That can be changed tooMay 31, 2016 at 12:08 am #37399quote :by fleetwinWell, the 62 model has a thermostat and needle bearings on the big rod ends. Fleetwin, the motor is in very nice cosmetic condition but is actually seized, talking to the owner he has said I can have it for free…
Certainly a good project for myself to try and get it running again… 😎quote :I like the 1956 model, myself. The shrouding is a lot tougher and and there is better quality parts on it as well.

That can be changed tooIt is certainly a double edged sword as I certainly do prefer the styling and the metal shrouds of the 1956, but I am not able to source one here down under for less that $1200 AUD (approx. $865 USD), but if I choose I can get a 1962.
Room for thought

Frank,
Last year I was brokering a deal between Doug Penn and an Aussie outboard collector for Australian & English outboards… There were about 20 that Doug chose and a quote for all of those to be shipped from Perth, West Australia to Tampa, Florida, USA was about $2250 AUD ( approx $1620 USD).
That deal didn’t go through unfortunately.I have actually talked to Doug about the possibility of getting a 1956 5.5hp Johnson shipped over to me with my Evinrude RBM parts that are coming soon; he thinks that it would be prohibitively expensive to ship.
That is why I’m trying to figure out how similar the 1962 and 1965 5.5hp’s are because I’d like to get one that ran as nicely as the one at our meet.
See the vid of the 5.5 in question below –https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sKb9RFUIyk
Cheers
