      Hey everyone.
I have a 1965 1000 serial 1852964 that stripped the lower unit Forward and clutch dog gears. I found a local 1966 950ss that I can buy for cheap. what are the differences besides the ignition. I would like to put the 950ss engine on in place of mine because i think I’m only getting spark on 1,3,5 cylinders. It would like to be able to interchange parts on them but I’m not sure what is different. Any help would be great because i need to get it tomorrow. Thanks in advance!!!

When doing swaps on Mercury stuff, especially in that vintage range, I have found that you have to go by serial number search, part by part. Mercury was constantly updating their product and didn’t wait for a model year change to do it. To start with, though, the simplest thing I could tell you is to get the serial off the 950, go to Marine engine.com and look up the power head mounting gasket. If they are the same number or one supersedes to the other, then you know the castings will match up, stud holes will align, etc. Now, there may still be different stud LENGTHS…..The subtle differences can go on and on and on…..OR it COULD just bolt right on. You just never can know for sure.

        Long live American manufacturing!
