I don’t want to spend a couple hundred bucks for a smart phone/picture taking/contract etc… so it was suggested to buy a digital camera w/a San Disk/point-shoot/USB or plug in to PC.. I love the photos here on AOMCI for instruction..

Who is using the digital camera option and what products would you suggest..I have a 4-year old Gateway PC with tons of memory available yet using Windows 7 . Thank you. (MA) please post here because I am sure others will be interested as well. Just went out and bought some ammonia to clean my integral tanks per AOMCI tips..

        Hi;

I’m not sure exactly what your question is. In general I would suggest Canon as a brand….but Nikon and Sony and Panasonic are fine as well. The market for simple point-n-shoots has fallen apart largely because phone cameras work so well and most everyone has them. Even $100 buys a very nice point-n-shoot these days.

Sales of the larger more advanced digital cameras (Called DSLR’s) (Digital Single Lens Reflex) is booming because people get started with a phone camera and then decide they want more control and quality.

If you want to tell me more regarding the specifics of what features/performance you are looking for…maybe I can suggest a specific model.

I want to use a point and shoot digital camera that I can either plug in with a USB cable or a card reader into my PC ports. It has been suggested that a Sony W 800 with a 20 .1 pixel and 5x zoom/lith-ion battery/should do the job for between $88-112 depending on the kit contents ..I do not have nor want Wi-Fi.

PS I still use a Cannon 35 mm print film camera with manual controls and all kinds of telescopic lens..I guess that is why I like old outboards..

I’m sure you could get as many opinions on this as there are members, but I’ve used this inexpensive Kodak Easyshare CD80 point and shoot camera for over 5 years and have had no problems with it. I’ve taken 1,000s of pictures of family, pictures for eBay, Craigslist, and here. It’s easy to use, it has 10.2 megapixels so you get a pretty decent close-up shot, it takes videos, and uses the standard SD memory card. I bought it new off Amazon 5 yrs. ago for 52.95+shipping.

I use my little Galaxy Tab4. I can take pictures and post ads, with the same device. I love technology.
My cameras and pc are loosing popularity in my house.

For that matter; don’t discount the quality of the better phone cameras. As long as you don’t want to control depth of field (selective focus) and shutter speed (to freeze action or show motion/blur) phones do an admirable job as a simple camera.

I understand that you don’t want a new one or pay for a plan with a carrier…..but to use an old phone as a camera you don’t need to pay for a plan. Of course; you can’t use it as a phone…..but the camera and other features will work just fine…..and the ones I’ve seen connect to your computer via USB just like many point-n-shoot cameras do. Maybe some family member or friend has one kicking around that can be "re-purposed" as a camera; at least in the interim…..

The important thing is to jump in with whatever you have and SHOOT PICTURES….they will turn out fine as long as you understand the limitations of the camera (even $5000 Pro Cameras have limitations!)

The other thing that you should familiarize yourself with is a simple software program that can crop and re-size (IMPORTANT FOR POSTING TO FORUMS…) your pictures. Most cameras come with a free program….or we can suggest free ones for you to use.

I am on my 4th Canon Power Shot 3100 and love it….. $40 on ebay w/free shipping.
                  4x zoom and 12mp.
The only problem is if you drop it on a corner, most likely it will die right there.
other than that, the photos are awesome. I don’t use the cord that
goes from the camera to the computer . . . just remove the disk from
the camera and plug into your computer and download.
My 4th one is going on 3 years old now.

All my videos are done with a GoPro camera. Light and compact and available cheap (used) on Ebay or other sites.

                      my 2 cents

The camera companies have been playing games, some are good and other very similar models, often a newer replacement sounding model from the same company are far worse than the model they seemingly replace. For instance the Canon elph 330HS is quite good but the 340HS is not. Sony does the same thing. The newer CMOS image sensors are really good, some of them see better than I do, even without the flash. Sony has a GoPro like camera, the HDR-AS100V that also has GPS so it displays your speed in the video. It also works underwater, for lower unit inspections I’m thinking?

For what it’s worth we have digital camera s all over the house and nobody bothers with them as the quality of our phone cameras are so good these days and we always have them with us. If you already own any sort of cell phone think about upgrading to a smart phone. You won’t need a special plan just because the camera has a phone. It will connect to your PC via USB or to your internet connection by Wi-Fi. My whole information processing collection is down to a Netbook and Smartphone now. And before you ask – yes I was born in the 50’s 🙂
