started working on one of my winter projects… this long or ?? extra long 4hp had a bad recoil fixed up with you all’s guidance.
Down came the GC …. well surprise the front drain cavity was filled up to the top with hard packed sand !! . OMG The water drain hole never had a chance probably for the last 20 years !!
Impeller stiff but all there thankfully 🙂
p.s. 4hp in the picture not mine… mine is longer

January 4, 2022 at 5:04 am #252321Welcome to the Dark Side. A lot of times that accumulated sand will expand and break out the side of the gear case. The original drain hole is about a sixteenth of an inch, which is ridiculously small. Virtually anything would plug it up. Your sand is only the tip of the Dark Side iceberg.
Long live American manufacturing!

January 4, 2022 at 8:34 am #252327Don’t worry…I was dark sided from age 18-55.. till I went ETEC (17 years) . these little Mercs are just low cost hobby investments to be resold for cost & parts only, to recoup my $$ .
Most go for about $150 cdn or less.
I am always amazed at how little some folks do not do “very” basic maintenance . A lot of motors run 30-50hrs / year & used for a trip or two in the wild
yet they can’t drop a gearcase to change an impeller and…clear sand away let alone a good coat or two of car wax.thankfully they supply us with hobby material to keep busy during snow storms and -25c temps 🙂
btw… was looking on Amazon for chrome tape to touch up the cowl. A bit pricy but the local Dollar store had a nice sticky 5 roll tape kit with chrome finish tape in it for $2. 🙂 may not last long but looks pretty good. A shot of Mercury black and it will look like new 🙂
