I have low compression of 1991 15HP (78/90 psi). I found this powerhead from ebay and paid  Usd $ 167.50 (120 + shipping) = $226.00 Can because the seller said it had an excellent compression and 120/120 psi. I hope I could swap it to my current powerhead and should have a good decent outboard. I put the flywheel and spin it with the power drill. It turn out 85/92 psi and one piston got scored on it. I gave some WD-40 to wet the cylinder and test it again it was about 89/93 psi.

I would contact the seller and return it if possible.  Perhaps he will let you pull the head and have a look inside.  But first, you may want to try a different compression gage, perhaps yours is inaccurate

Cyl. scoring being present is it worth it. ??   I would try to negotiate a  refund/return but  unless seller eats the shipping $$$$.

Not certain but I believe a EBAY complaint on the seller is possible  if the trade was made under  false  assertions.

The seller responses “Also. Results are gonna slightly vary from gauge to gauge. I could get a reading of 110 with one gauge an then a reading of 120 on another. The numbers being relatively the same on each cylinder is mainly what you’re looking for if using cheap auto parts store gauges/harbor freight gauges.I would take a return on it if you’re not satisfied. My gauge showed different then that. Mine was just a hair under 120. Have you tried a different gauge since you have no tested two different power heads with the same readings. I would suspect the gauge is weak or not up to par. Is it a harbor freight gauge or one of those cheap auto parts store gauges. I’ve never had good results with those type of gauges.
As far as the piston scoring I’ve seen worse with these motors an still pump out higher numbers then 100 psi. Please try an different gauge or if you dont think the gauge is wrong I’d happily to a return an recheck it myself here

I have used my 15 year old Mastercraft gauge (made in Canada at that time) to check it. I also check my other 9.9 hp and it shows 115/118 psi as well. I use this gauge to check my 1973 20Hp, it shows 120/121 psi.

The intake open, I could see the rings moving (not stuck) and very clean (no carbon disposit), spray some WD-40 to wet the cylinder and use the power mill to spin the flywheel, I could read 89/93 psi.

The seller will take it back but I have to pay the shipping cost. I had paid $40 usd for shipping already and I have to pay $$$ for the return. It may not worthy! It ends up $80-$100 for a lesson :(. I bought it since the sellers rating is good and his business in outboard used parts so I believe his statement is accurate!

That’s a tough situation considering the cost to you for return shipping.  PLUS…..when I read the seller’s statement to you….that is concerning as well…..

I’d happily to a return an recheck it myself here

He is wording that in such a way as to be saying….sure….send it back and I will check it.  No mention of giving you a refund.  He might “check it” and say “Yep;  reads 120 on my gauge”.

Lt us know how it works out.  Maybe at the very least you could negotiate a partial refund and you keep the motor.  Better than nothing.

I would go direct to talk to eBay.  Tell them the part was not as advertised,  came with a damaged piston and the Seller is uncooperative.  I think eBay will look into this and just refund you all your money.  Time to stop messing around with the Seller.

Please let us know how this comes out.

and…. how did the seller think the PH was in such great condition with  the piston scored… ???           at least  it does not    look the the cyl walls are damaged.

at the end of all this… if you are stuck owning the PH…    give it a try  under  load.   maybe the piston scoring won’t  be an issue.  but still wondering how it got that way.

my Oldies from the 50s and  60s  look better.

and  in the end if the seller  is not a straight shooter  I think you would be ok to publish  a recap…. with his  coordinates….so we all know.   up to you  !

Did he say in his listing that buyer is responsible for return shipping? If not, go through eBay and you will get all your money back if listing misrepresented the ph.
