I pulled the carb off my Champion 4K parts motor today, and I’ve never seen so much
“dry” crud in a carb. It’s not rust particles, so I have to assume it’s dried “mix fuel”,
but I can’t understand the volume of the crud.
Usually there’s mostly gooey, “tar” like crud when one pulls apart an old carb that had
gas sitting in it for years.
Any explanation?P.S. – I can hear some old gas sloshing around in the tank yet, but haven’t got the cap off yet!

It’s all clean inside the powerhead, so if it was critters,
the throttle plate must have kept them out.
Guess I could do the “Taste Test”!Prepare to be boarded!
January 7, 2023 at 6:56 am #270814That’s a lot of poo, if that’s what it is. They say, “You don’t [poo] where you live,” but I guess microbes don’t have ears, so they wouldn’t get the message…..Anyway, that’s a very interesting picture. I have seen that kind of stuff once in a great while, but nothing like that amount! A TASTE TEST??? Younger guys at work freak out when I taste-test bilge water, to see if it’s salt or fresh; but I definitely would not taste THAT stuff!!

January 7, 2023 at 9:23 am #270820Bill, I’d be more apt for the “taste test” if I had some bilge water to wash it
down with, lol.
All the carb parts have been soaking in “tuner cleaner” overnight,
so I’ll see if it’s salvageable once the garage warms up a bit…….
-4 degrees right now, so I may have an extra cup of coffee!Maybe I need to make on of those Champion Hot Rods with this power head!

January 7, 2023 at 10:59 am #270824Ummmm…. if you found crud in the carb, you may also find it in the mag and or recoil
Up north here idle outboards are the favorite long-term storage for red squirrel’s pine cones. A couple of years ago my Merc 9.8 was so jammed; I couldn’t turn it over due to a plethora of cones between the recoil and flywheel.
The cones continued to ripen (open up) after they were stashed by that industrious rodent. As they opened, they created pressure on all components under the hood — and made removing the cowl difficult.
January 7, 2023 at 5:55 pm #270838Need3fish, rewind and mag are already off, and I found nothing similar
to what was in the carb “lurking about”.I chickened out on the taste test, but did touch a lighter to a pile of the
carb substance. While the flame did increase slightly, the stuff would
not burn on it’s own.Frank’s guess is probably good as any as to what it was.
The bottom of the carb bowl was somewhat pitted, but the carb is back
together, and I found no major issues with it.Prepare to be boarded!
January 8, 2023 at 6:01 am #270846Lookin’ good. Do you have an ultra sonic parts cleaner? I am thinking about getting one.

January 8, 2023 at 9:50 am #270862Bill, I “should” have one, but have not taken the plunge yet.
Any thoughts yet on a “good value” one? This carb sat overnight in OMC tuner cleaner, then
a little bit of Dremel work with a wire brush.Prepare to be boarded!

I thought everybody would recognize the suggestion as a joke. Just goes to prove, look out what you say. Somebody might believe you.
