What is the best material to use as a  prop drive pin once the shock absorber is  welded ?     3/16 brass rod,  a common brass bolt  with   threads red cut to size….?   a 3/16 drill bit shank ?

I’d go with a brass rod.

CD … 5.5 HP. I wouldn’t use anything stronger that brass rod. When in doubt, I always lean to the “softer” side on shear pins. Some depends on your boating environment…. clean open water, no rocks and logs, you might even go with an aluminum pin.  Just keep a set of oars in the boat !

ok thanks brass it is .

Would a  piece of common brass bolt with threads left on be better/worse.  than a simple brass rod ??

I  am figuring the threads  themselves could absorb “some”  impact before the main  shaft breaks or bends.

The working diameter of the threaded bolt isn’t the same as the diameter of  a prop pin  as the diameter would be taken at the root of the threads, which is considerably less than the OD of the pin. It would work but I’d rather have a proper size pin in there instead of a pocket full of bolts. Hobby stores sell brass rod in various sizes.
