Anyone know for certain if there should be a rubber o-ring seal in the spline groove at the top of the drive shaft on a ’65 9.2hp Sea King? When I dropped the LU to replace the impeller, a weak little broken o-ring dropped from who knows where. That groove is the only place I can find where one could go and what it’s purpose might be? Water, gas, exhaust fume seal? I’m going to ask this question: What are the consequences of not replacing that seal if I don’t locate one? I’ve left messages and emails with all the vintage boat parts market places I can find. Crickets.

Without a model number, I can’t say for absolute certain, but more than likely is is supposed to have an o-ring in that groove. You don’t want to hear about the consequences of leaving it out, but I’ll tell you anyway. The splines will rust out of the crankshaft and you can kiss the motor goodby.

Thanks! The model # is VWB-19077A if that makes a difference. And yes, I did want to know the consequences! I appreciate the help. I’ll keep checking before I put it together.

A very kind thought, thanks. If you don’t, who may have one or the size? I was also wondering about a plumbing shop. I’m more used to messing with vintage cars and travel trailers than boat motors…..of which I know nothing. With those, you just use parts that will work. Again….thanks.

Most Auto parts stores have an assortment to pick from.
