I purchased a 1955 5.5 Johnson qd-12.The guy I bought it from said he had just put in a new impeller.Said he started the motor and it was pumping water,Put it in gear and it stalled out.He said recoil was very hard to pull over so he did not start it again.I took the power head off set it on the bench pulled the recoil it worked fine.Tore the bottom end off and all apart replaced seal o-rings and gasket.Took impeller apart to double check. When I reinstalled impeller and housing I tried to turn shaft by hand. It would not move.Took impeller housing off shaft moved when I turned it.Checked all parts with part numbers and all are correct.Every time I tried to reinstall the impeller and tighten it the shaft would not turn.Do not know what to try next. Hope someone can help. Thank you so much. Russ…
July 6, 2016 at 9:05 pm #39729does this have a drive spring?
July 6, 2016 at 9:07 pm #39731Check the shock absorber. It could have a broken spring.

July 6, 2016 at 9:30 pm #39738You must mean a CD-12, a QD-12 would be a 10 hp.
But if the shock absorber spring were broken, then the shaft would be difficult to turn with or without the impeller installed, correct?
July 6, 2016 at 9:38 pm #39740Not necessarily. Removing the screws from the housing could relieve the pressure enough to allow it to turn. This shock absorber could have found that fine line of being too tight.
July 6, 2016 at 11:00 pm #39746can this spring be replaced or do I have to replace shock.Russ…
July 6, 2016 at 11:38 pm #39748First you have to determine whether it is broken or just expanded. Clean out the hole real good and get it out in the bright sunlight and peer in there at the spring to see if it is broken. If not broken, just mash it back together with a large vise, press or yes a hammer.
That spring winds up and slips when you hit an underwater obstruction. Do it often enough and it "grows" in length.

Is the impeller a Sierra part?
Didn’t Sierra put out a bunch of impellers that were too thick?Steve A W
July 7, 2016 at 12:52 am #39756The internal spring itself very seldom breaks so what usually happens is the two outer halves of the clutch wind up on themselves after the prop hits a rock or something hard. The clutch can be pressed back to size with a large vice or something until it measures 6 11/16" long. Anything larger than this measurement and it will probably rub and start binding on the lower water pump bearing plate.
