Has anyone successfully made one? I bought some cork material off ebay to attempt this myself. I bought stoppers much larger than I needed, so I could cut them down.
I ended up with a bench full of cork debris when I was done ;)<
My hole saws just tore the cork up, couldn’t get a clean cut through it. I suspect it was due to the quality of the cork, seemed `loose` and airy.
My original is shot. It is so swollen it barely fits in the float bowl, and sticks on the way up and down, flooding the motor.
I would think carving one out of a new style float would go better, but have never seen one as thick as I would need to do this.
Any thoughts, or know where to get one?
September 13, 2015 at 12:54 pm #23744I wonder how hard it would be to reverse engineer the material used on the black floats, then make a mould and make our own floats?
September 13, 2015 at 11:35 pm #23795it’s easier to sand the cork. I have a1" bench machine and I just spin the cork against the belt.
September 14, 2015 at 12:01 am #23798What year QD? They likely are still available through Sea-way marine, if not at your local OMC dealers. Also try Engine Blade and Prop. Ganoteck. I understand is another source.
As far as making and selling your own? Heck yes. Outboard enthusiasts greatly appreciate your help.
My good friend Frank Robb makes excellent toolsSeptember 14, 2015 at 12:34 am #23801A member is sending me a NOS one!
Zeph, I tried all the usual sources, none had one. This is for the early QD10, the fat float.
September 14, 2015 at 1:11 am #23803Since problem is solved, I guess this is moot. But if I had to make one, I think I would explore the possibility of using a new Nitrophyl float for the 18-up motors of later years and see if it could be cut and shaped to fit the original brass hinge. OR, even the Nitrophyl one that replaces the cork float in newer QD’s etc. Just thinking out loud.
September 14, 2015 at 1:41 am #23810I had thought of that Frank….I could not find any in my stash with the correct amount of width. I found one with too large an OD that I could sand down, but couldn’t get it flush with the carb casting as it was not wide enough…..wasn’t sure how to overcome that with the original hinge.
September 14, 2015 at 1:47 am #23811There is a problem with these boards, if I write a response but someone posts a response while I’m writing, my response disappears!
September 14, 2015 at 2:38 am #23814If that happens, it should give you a chance to edit your response, and show what the other poster that posted first wrote, then you hit send again.
