I need to replace the prop shaft seal on my Elgin 1.25 hp. It must be an odd size, 7/16″x13/16″, because Chicago Rawhide doesn’t stock it. Anyone know of a source?

Can the bore for the OD be altered?Prepare to be boarded!

Can the bore for the OD be altered?I had to do just that for a couple seals for my Neptune. Either the ID or the OD was available, but not both. Prop seal I had to bore the housing bigger. Crank pto side I had to step the crank .030″ to fit a seal. Time will tell if I chose wisely on the crank…..
April 29, 2021 at 3:15 pm #237409I don’t have the tools to bore out the ID to fit a new OD of the seal, much less keep the new bore concentric to the prop shaft. I might just have to change the lube often.
April 29, 2021 at 5:47 pm #237410Try these guys and this part number. These fit my 1 1/4 Elgin prop shafts. These are lip seals, too. The old ones were just quad rings.

April 30, 2021 at 4:57 pm #237457Jim, regarding your PM to me, those seals fit right into my prop shaft bearing housing just right, without any modification. You have the 1 1/4 hp for sure, right? Not the air cooled two hp?

April 30, 2021 at 9:33 pm #237473Yep, the 1.25 hp (571-58301). I’ll re-measure, maybe I was looking at the wrong diameter. I can’t imagine that dimension was changed during production.
May 1, 2021 at 5:13 am #237480The only other thing I can think of, is that I might have pressed that seal into the shell of the existing seal; but I don’t think so. But maybe. I just remember that I was so happy to have found that seal with the 7/16″ inner diameter and the outer 3/4″ as a combination. I hadn’t been able to find that anyplace else. There was definitely no machining of any kind, or any special bushings cobbled up. That I am sure of.

May 1, 2021 at 11:16 am #237487I double-checked the diameter of that I.D. for the seal with calipers, it’s definitely 13/16″ (.812). I removed the gearcase cover and there wasn’t much water inside. I’ll just have to watch it. Unfortunately there are no screws to remove to drain or fill the gearcase.
