      Does anyone have a service manual for a ‘58 7.5 Elgin? I’m putting mine back together and there was a loose ring/washer in the leg. I can’t figure out where it goes.

          Answered my own question.
          It’s a broken seal.
          Lower crank seal.
          No rubber left.
          So what that I took another motor apart to find out.

            I do that a lot. Look at another motor to figure out what’s going on!! Saved me many times. I’m notorious for not taking pics and tearing things down to the last nut and bolt then months later when I get back to working on it again I scratch my head and wonder. I like to think I can remember on my own….
