elgin questions or 2

i just started looking into restoring a pretty nice elgin 1 1/4 hp. its been setting for decades. i gave it a quick compression test and after a couple pulls got it to 60 lbs. what should i be getting for that motor? also i been looking for a carb for a week now i can not find a md a1 anywere. cant even get a re[ly from many inquires maybe i should walk away from this one?

There should be plenty of Elgin parts “out there”, so keep looking for a carb.
Looks like the gas tank is in pretty good condition.
Guessing it will run on 60 psi, but perhaps not a slow idler………
time will tell on that one. I have a few Elgin’s, but none as small as yours.
Regardless how it runs, it should be a worthy project, if for no other
reason than it will look “cute” when all fixed up.

Looks great. 60 will run. Likely will come up after some run time.

thanks guys i did some filling on the tanks dents primed it and started cleaning her up some. i will keep looking for that darn carb!

Your little 1-1/4 hp Elgin appears to be the only model outboard that used the Tillotson MD-1A
carb. There’s lots of MD carbs though. I wonder if a different one would work until
you find the correct one?

i read were you could use a md a55 but something had to be done to it? a1 kit maybe?

Any MD carb from any early Elgin single or small twin will probably work and should be worth a try.
