I pulled the aluminum props off of three different little Elgin outboard (Westbend)
and noted that they all had steel shear pins.
Anyone have a chart saying if they’re suppose to be steel or brass?
I did find one chart that listed the size as 5/32", but didn’t say what material.
The prop on the 3.5 Elgin I was working on had a chunk out of the hub where
the shear pin goes. Perhaps this was Sears’ plan to sell props? Also I ended up with a prop from a 2.5 Elgin. Tried one from a 5.5 hp,
but too much pitch. Are these props and their pitch listed in any chart?
Prop part numbers in this link…..

June 17, 2016 at 1:50 am #38447Richard, thanks for posting the shear pin chart. It tells me my
Elgin takes a #5 Cosom shear pin, but is a #5 brass or steel I wonder?Frank, The model #’s of the Elgins are
Model 571.58521 (3.5 hp)
Model 571.58601 (5.5 hp)
Model 571.58401 (2.5 hp)Thanks!

June 17, 2016 at 2:47 am #38454All use same shear pin = 5/32" x 1-3/16" Brass
571-58521 prop is 7-1/2" x 5-1/2"
571-58601 prop is 7-1/2" x 7-1/2"
571-58401 prop is 7-1/2" x 4-1/2"June 17, 2016 at 3:08 am #38458Anonymous
I would guess that the lack of a "*" after the pin dimensions on the first page above means brass
(the * means stainless)June 17, 2016 at 12:16 pm #38467Thanks all for the information.
I see now why the 3.5 Elgin was struggling with the 5.5 hp prop
on it. Just strange that all three I took
apart had steel shear pins.Prepare to be boarded!
June 18, 2016 at 10:31 pm #38542Does a chart exist with the original West Bend part numbers for these shear pins.
June 19, 2016 at 11:54 am #38582That chart is from the shear pin manufacturer, not sure if West Bend made a chart…
