Does anyone have info on Elto battery coils from 1930’s? Are they more reliable than ones under flywheels? Did Evinrude produce them or were they Elto only?
April 25, 2016 at 2:24 pm #35463Contact George Emmanuel. He has done quite a lot of work in this area.
April 25, 2016 at 3:04 pm #35464Are you referring to the ones used on Battery ignition Elto’s? Round tube used on opposed twins, fires both cylinders at the same time?

classicomctools@gmail.comApril 25, 2016 at 5:29 pm #35481Richard, Yes those are the ones I’m referring to. I am wondering how they work, if they run off the same points and condenser? If anyone has diagrams or info on them.
April 25, 2016 at 6:49 pm #35485More often than not the condensers go bad, and you can’t just replace them, due top the potting used, it is NASTY stuff. You can, by following our own "Tubs" videos on Youtube, find out how to replace the entire ignition, i.e. coil, and condenser using a Zephyr coil and a common condenser, the points are not in the tube.. The coil generally gets destroyed when removing the condenser.
OR, you can just contact, Doug Penn, as he has them already rebuilt, just connect and go…

classicomctools@gmail.comApril 26, 2016 at 3:26 am #35518Thanks Richard! I Pm’d George and checked out Tubs video on changing out the coils. Hopefully George will have info on how the battery and system connects and works.
ThanksApril 26, 2016 at 10:34 am #35527If memory serves, battery connections are somewhat irrelevant, but I recall reading somewhere that you should switch POS and NEG occasionally.

I’ve been away from the private messages a bit but I did respond today..It is best to communicate with me via e-mail: gemmanuel@bellsouth.net so can send some pictures.
I have heard the same thing Richard said because reversing the polarity maintains the points.
