An Elto twin just followed me home. Sigh. I know nothing about Elto’s. Tag on the tank indicates “Super Elto” it’s a twin. beyond that and a serial number, I’m at a loss. HELP! Serial number is 3180002. I’d love to find a year, model, parts, diagrams, anything to help with my next shop art project.

We all love outboards but we also all love pictures of outboards.  There was that saying….”A picture is worth a NOS Waterman”….

You have what looks to be a Speedster but 318 isn’t on any listing I have. 0002 would be serial #2. There was a change in the tag they stamp the S# on in 1930 so my best guess is its a 1929.  I’m going to post some links that pertain to this motor. I cant post them all in one response or everything disappears. Here is a link to one of mine running-     https://youtu.be/lJ6cXeWWi7g?si=5W9SXiSaLoF8DVlw

Model 318 makes it a 1929 Speedster that was sold with a rudder attachment as shown. It came that way from the factory and was not an aftermarket or dealer add-on. As Tubs said, its the second motor built under that model number thus probably the first day of production for the 318.

                1929-HS-Speedster

As usual, the timer bushing is done-for, but there’s a person by the name of Dustin Greene in Loogootee Indiana who has reproduced them in aluminum and usually has some available for sale so if you look him up he can probably help you. Replacing the busing isn’t a difficult job if you have any mechanical skill.

Hint – make sure the timer cam is in place when you drill the holes for the rivets that fasten the timer bushing to the point plate.

                Hope this helps

From my picture files – A 1929 Speedster, with what looks to be the factory rudder assembly, but the serial number is that of a standard 1929 Service Speedster.

Great! 2 questions answered, 10 to go! LOL. Now all I need is a Rudder Assy and brackets. Did they come with a tiller handle? mine is missing. Never fails.  Thank you for your information.

Can the coil wires be replaced or do I need to rebuild, replace get creative with that

There is a couple of different options on the coil, good videos available of “disassembling one” not always an easy task, and another is replacing the tube and all internals with new  components and having new wiring as well, works very well, and yes I designed the replacement tube and internals…zero mess with the replacement tube, just build it, install it and run your motor.

For a tiller go to any home center or hardware store that has a metal rack and get some 7/8″ OD aluminum pipe. Cut it to a length you feel would be best.  I don’t use the word rare often but, the rudder assembly is rare, on a motor, or just the parts.
Here are a couple videos on repairing the coil or you can use one of Richards replacement tubes.  https://youtu.be/xwbTlC1xIlA?si=craDOGpo5SrZT8q9   ——— https://youtu.be/e2vxDqF_OEU?si=MlK5C0AmKlYX4-S1
