Assuming that the lower unit on my Franken motor is the
one in the topic header, what’s the proper way to set the
      gear case gear backlash?

There’s a hole all the way through the gear case ahead
of the prop shaft, that’s not threaded for an adjustment plug.
Whatever plug that goes in there is missing.
Is it suppose to be a tapered plug that just taps in?

The gear mesh as is, is too tight. There’s no wear evidence
of there being a thrust washer behind the prop shaft gear.

I experimented a little with backlash by dropping brass washer in the bronze cartridge
until the end up the prop shaft touched them and lifted the gears apart a little.
I could do this, but doesn’t seem like how the factory intended.

I have no parts blowup for this model, and can’t find any procedures on
      this early of a model.
      Ideas? Thanks!

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Thanks Tubs, interesting, with similarities, but then again, different.
I don’t have the threaded hole nor the big brass plug that screws into it.

I searched all my data and the Net and I can’t find anything on the
gear case of an Elto G to see if it looks like mine.

There are only very minor differences between the model J and G. There is a model J manual floating around the internet. I’m away from home this week or I’d send it to you.

Thanks Wayne, I’ll search for the manual.

Thanks Tubs. That does look like my lower unit, but I also thought
the Model G looks close as well. I’ll have to study the photos closer.
I see that the gearcase plug protrudes out the front of the gearcase
a ways……. will be good to know when I attempt to make one.

Interesting, the side profiles all look the same to me, but now I see this
G has the treaded brass plug in front of the gear case, that does not
                        protrude out.

More than likely mine in a “J” then. At any rate, I put the gear case back together
this morning with some brass washers and a new gasket for gear mesh control.

                        Thanks!
