Thanks for all your help.
This morning I reversed the wires. I had high hopes but unfortunately it didn’t start. It did jam occasionally when pulling.
Choking less also did not help.
I’ll remove the armature plate this evening to check if the wires are still ok.
Spark tester is underway.December 24, 2021 at 2:44 am #251661FrankR was right on the money,
“Good” spark will jump 1/4″ open air gap. Will it?
Using the spark tester it couldn’t even jump the smallest setting (1/8″).
So I worked my way back by replacing all the new ignition parts one by one by the old ones until I found that the problem was caused by the brand new coils!
It started after a couple of pulls, so all that’s left to do is some fine tuning and order better coils, but I’ve got a running engine again 🙂Thank you all for all your help, it’s really appreciated.

I’m sure there are more than one manufacturer of these coils and I wouldn’t buy them unless the have ‘Zhongfadz’ marked on the end of them. I’ve had good success with this brand but your mileage may vary. The worst ones I’ve seen for fit were from ‘Never Any Parts Available’ auto supply.
