I have an Evinrude 18hp 1972, model 18202R. I need to replace the starter rope and want to do it only once. Suggestions about size (diameter), construction and brand rope helpful. Thanks

My info only goes 1962 and older…but for THOSE 18 hp, is suggests 7/32 diameter 72 1/4 inches long, it does not specify brand nor construction, just calls for starter rope…It does state, that from this Service Bulletin, SB-864, carrying forward all motors are to either use 5/32 or 7/32 diameter cord…

Part number 772578 starter rope, 7/32" dia. x 72 1/4" long. It’s a hard braid nylon rope, not that soft flimsy weak stuff.

And it should be available at any authorized dealer near you. Support them when you can!

Stopped at local Evinrude dealer. " we standardized on 5/32." Will have to keep looking. Thanks for your help.

My local lawn mower shop caries a range of sizes of starter rope. 7/32" is common. I don’t measure the length. I wind up the spool as tight as it will go, and back off one turn til the hole for the rope lines up with the front of the housing. Thread the rope in, tie the knot, and let the spring wind it in. Cut to length so there’s a little tension holding the handle to the housing. Learned that method at about 8 years of age, am sure that there are a number of different methods that work just as well.
