Can anyone help me solve for why it will not fully engage in forward. Seems to slip out as I reach a certain rpm. Thanks for any tips!

September 27, 2021 at 10:41 am #247343When you say it “slips out of gear”, please be a little more specific..
Does it come out of gear and stay out of gear?
Or, does it come out of gear and only go back in when you slow the throttle down?
Or, does it seem to jump in and out of gear, the engine seems to “buck”?Am hoping you answer is one of the first two, then perhaps your rubber propeller hub is worn and slipping. It is also possible that your shear pin is partially broken. It is also possible that your engine is mounted up too high and the propeller is “ventilating” in the air mixed in with water.
If the engine “bucks”, and goes in and out of gear when it misbehaves, then it is more likely that you have clutch dog issues.. This could have been caused by a cable or shift system adjustment issue, which will have to be investigated as well…1 user thanked author for this post.
September 27, 2021 at 10:59 am #247345Fleetwin mentioned the clutch dog possibility. I concur with his suspicion. I have a 40 Evinrude cira 63-68. My 4 has a cracked lower unit which leads me to believe that water entered thru’ leaking seals, froze, and subsequently cracked the housing. I would not be surprised if our motors take the same clutch dogs. I am leaving home in a few minutes on a camping trip. While relaxing, I shall research the clutch dog part numbers. If the same, I’ll pull the clutch dog from my 40 and send it out to you. The total price will be the shipping cost. The clutch dog will be a donation to a fellow AOMC member. I’ll get back to you on Thursday afternoon. PS: When you see postings by Fleetwin, read them carefully. Although I have never met him, I hold him in high esteem as a very wise owl concerning vintage motors. (Just sayin’).
September 27, 2021 at 11:12 am #247346Thanks for the quick reply. It does not jump or buck. Just loses engagement as I move the throttle up. Then ehgages as I throttle down. I did notice my cotter was gone. So I pulled the prop. Shear pin was fine. I do not think there is a rubber hub. I can look again. My thought does go to a cable adjustment However even manually it does not stay engaged. Thanks for the parts offer Fred. I may take you up on that. fleetwin. If you have any pointers I am all propellers. Smile

OK, well that is actually a good sign…Shear pin is OK, so I would try a different prop…The rubber hub has probably spun. You can check the trim rod/pin positioning adjustment also. Perhaps someone set the trim pin out too far. Although it is a good idea to check cable adjustments and shift linkage frequently on these engines also. Once a clutch dog starts “jumping” due to an adjustment/linkage issue, it is usually damaged enough that it will require replacement, even if the adjustment/linkage issue is corrected….

September 28, 2021 at 10:03 am #247419Looks like relatively new prop…Perhaps it was just reworked. There is a rubber hub in there, just can’t see it. Hoping the new prop solves this issue…
