Sure way to tell if the hub is bad is to put a reference mark on the hub and prop and run it… remove the prop and see if the marks shifted.

Fleetwin mentioned the clutch dog possibility. I concur with his suspicion. I have a 40 Evinrude cira 63-68. My 4 has a cracked lower unit which leads me to believe that water entered thru’ leaking seals, froze, and subsequently cracked the housing. I would not be surprised if our motors take the same clutch dogs. I am leaving home in a few minutes on a camping trip. While relaxing, I shall research the clutch dog part numbers. If the same, I’ll pull the clutch dog from my 40 and send it out to you. The total price will be the shipping cost. The clutch dog will be a donation to a fellow AOMC member. I’ll get back to you on Thursday afternoon. PS: When you see postings by Fleetwin, read them carefully. Although I have never met him, I hold him in high esteem as a very wise owl concerning vintage motors. (Just sayin’).

According to my findings, both your 35 and my 40 use identical clutch dogs ( Part # 0305105). If your clutch dog is bad, reach out to me, please. Fred
