My 1960 Evinrude Starflite 75 hp starts right up , idles smoothly at 1000-1500 rpms but refuses to go over 2000 rpm at full throttle . Throttle linkage , magneto all hit their respected stops at full throttle . Throttle butterflies are wide open and timing is dead on . No lack of fuel flow or pressure . All four cylinders test within a couple of lbs. at 110-114 . Temp runs at 120-140 after warm up . When pushing throttle to wide open and rpm hits 2000-2010 the motor doesn’t choke or sputter , it just smoothly runs at that rpm . This all happened after a rebuild of the gear case and replacing the old prop . The only change was the old prop was 10 1/4 x 10 and the new OMC prop was 10 1/8 x 11 specified under original p/n .
Don’t know where to go from here . Before rebuild it ran up to 4000 rpm at full throttle ( way too quick for my 18′ Lyman ) .

Does it run better with the front door open or the hood off?

Yours is the magneto model, Correct? Years ago I had a similar problem with my 1961 Starflite, but mine is the 12 volt distributer version. After much “chasing” the issue, it turned out that the cog belt sprocket on the distributor shaft was loose and the key sloppy. So where as all the timing looked OK to the marks, in fact the distributer point cam was retarded. I don’t know if the same condition could exist on the magneto model.

Try it with the original prop back on and see if the RPM’s come up again. One inch of pitch shouldn’t make that much difference but it’s worth a try.
