I’ve ordered a new set of OMC condensors/points.
I ordered a new set of OMC points and they were made in China. Didn’t fit without significant modifications. From now on I’m reconditioning old (but good) points not from China which fit the way they are supposed to.
May 3, 2022 at 12:41 am #259353spark boot conn. to block 8.4 and 8.7 k ohm. JT
That seems a bit high unless you installed the offshore coils which read a bit higher than OMC/BRP coils.
Did you slide the boot back and look at the spring terminals condition? If it is loose or corroded, you can still get an ohm reading but it physically can’t carry the juice needed to fire the plug.
May 3, 2022 at 8:45 am #259358side note: my last ” overseas” coils read pretty high also ….bit anxious to see how my restored 5.5 johnson will perform

May 3, 2022 at 5:11 pm #259374OMC is China made and out of spec., that’s disapointing. So, best might be to find old stock of am. made points, and source the caps elsewhere (since old stock caps will be suspect)? Who makes the best caps? JT
May 3, 2022 at 5:17 pm #259379All new ignition — everything. The coils are light green — what should these test at? points and condensors are Sierra. The Sierra points are garbage. Not sure about the caps yet. JT
May 3, 2022 at 7:45 pm #259397caps in a can at .22uf can most likely be replaced with these .22uf good for 630V …..
I would sleeve the metal conductors with heat shrink or pieces od stripped off wire coating and just bolt one end the grd and the other on the point screw

May 4, 2022 at 4:26 pm #259419Spark plug wires?? check for cracked chaffed spots that could be shorting high voltage to ground. This will not show up with continuity or resistance test. An old trick is to spin it over in a darkend room… look and listen.

May 7, 2022 at 9:46 pm #259544I’ll try them since they are so cheep. I’m used to guitar amp caps that start at 10 times the dollars and go way up. JT
May 8, 2022 at 12:04 am #259547here are some links to the Western Region AOMCI with great articles on testing repairing caps.
the author m.Mohat specifies 850v caps as the best solution for rebuild caps but 630v may be suitable nonetheless ….something to try out anyway
the square ones above can be stuffed in emptied capacior cans* as shown but nothing wrong with direct connections between grd and points hidden under the flywheel …see comment below from m.Mohat’s article
- just be certain to insulate the top wire from the side of the can. I have reused the old capacitor short carboard tubes

May 10, 2022 at 10:52 pm #259701Opinion: Points can almost always be polished up and continued in service. Condensers are another story as NOS may have deteriorated in storage and new ones may be low quality. Read Mr. Mohat’s articles linked above. Servicing ignitions isn’t as easy as it used to be.
