Hey guys,
2 quick questions on an Evinrude 3012:
- Inside the air silencer, there’s apparently an insert & a spring (according to the manual). My motor does not have either one. The question on this is, what exactly do those parts do and can I run the motor without them?
- The float in the carburetor is a dark, brown color, almost black. Is this useable and if not, where can I order a replacement or substitution?
Thanks for the info, appreciate the knowledge.
August 15, 2022 at 4:01 pm #264415There is supposed to be a screen between the silencer and carburetor. Is that what you mean? Yeah, it’ll work without it on your motor with adjustable high speed needle.
Old 375919 shellaced cork float is replaced by new number 396514. It looks different and is black, but is correct. It’ll last “forever”.
August 15, 2022 at 4:06 pm #264418I’m not sure what the engineers had in mind with those silencer parts, unless
they make a more torturous part for the air to traverse the tube, and hence
silence the intake noise.
If you can tune it to run okay without those parts, I wouldn’t worry about it.The dark carb float is probably aged varnish. As long as the float is sound,
I’d use it. I believe there’s carb kits of that era that would have a float that
works. Maybe someone can give you the kit number.Prepare to be boarded!
August 15, 2022 at 6:46 pm #264425The 3012 parts manual does show a large spring inside the silencer. Probably only used on the first models and deemed unnecessary on later models. Purpose unknown.
The diagram does call out for the screen between the carb and the silencer but it isn’t shown in any diagrams.
I’ll post the photos when File Explorer lets me.

I have the screen in between the carb and the silencer. That’s in real good shape.
Eventually, I would like to paint this motor the original colors if you guys know a good supplier for that. I have the colors written down somewhere…
August 16, 2022 at 10:06 am #264451There’s two or three people that sell paint in the original colors. I don’t see
any of them listed in our links page.
I’ve seen them on the AOMCI Facebook page though.Prepare to be boarded!
