Well, then back to what I said originally. That is approaching a Megohm. That’s a lot of resistance. I meg = 1,000,000 Ohms. A heck of a lot more than <>5K (5,000 Ohms)

A coil with that kind of resistance probably has a break in the secondary winding. It has been arcing across the break, making a carbon track. It might even produce a spark and surprise you by starting and running–for a while. But as it does, it is arcing across that break and burning the ends of the wires back, making the gap wider and wider. Eventually, it is the end of the line for that coil.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

with spark plug wire usually better off if you cut it about an inch from the coil and make the connection and solder it less chance to mess up the coil put some shrink tube and or liquid electrical tape on the connection

Ok thank you all for the replies! I will try that out later this afternoon and report back. Our plan, if we get it running, is to restore it to like-new condition. What was the original color of the gas tank? The motor wasn’t painted right?

              Thanks, Nate

The motor is in rough shape. The gas tanks has surface rust and the tiller handle is broken off so we have to fix that. But other than that its not too bad. Once we get it back together I’ll take a few pictures for you guys.

I dont know……. The difference between an original motor and a restored copy, is quite a lot.
Restored motors have been noted to bring in quite a lot more value. You can see for yourself at nymarine.com
The only time an original brings in more than an original, is if the original looks as good as the restored copy. Sorry guys, numbers just don’t lie. 🙂
I know the motor in Tub’s top picture will bring a lot more than the one in the bottom picture.
People like old motors, that look really nice 😀

Well, it sounds like in this case, a resto would be a nice move. Its a good way to learn your motor through and through, plus you’ll have a nice project to look back on, if you have your son involved.
It’s exactly what I did to learn about my first motor. Motors of this nature are fun, simple and cost effective to restore.
