Looks like I need a new condenser for my Sportwin now. When it’s cool and I crank it over, it’s got a nice fat spark, but after about a minute of running it starts running rough and loses spark. Anyone know what condenser will work? Everything else seems to be good, the carb is good, and it’s pumping a lot of water.

Here are the Evinrude/Elto capacitor specs. A modern capacitor is great. If you want to preserve the authentic look, the shell of the original part may be used to house the modern eqquivelent. . . 🙂

          Here’s a link to Digi-Key for a modern 0.1 uF capacitor for your ’39 3.3 horse motor.

I decided to go with a Briggs and Stratton condenser instead of one of the others. It’s a .22uF, which I wasn’t sure would work, but I had one laying around, so I threw it in anyway. Works a treat and is a direct bolt in! I don’t have a part number to share, but they make them new and it’s made for loads of B&S engines from the 30’s through the newer 5hp flatheads.

If the capacitance is way off, the motor may run OK but there may be excessive metal transfer from one point to the other.

Can anyone post a picture of a new Capacitor in an old ‘shell’ that Garry refers to?

It would look just like the old capacitor. . . 🙂

So, I’m guessing I would pull out the innards of the old condenser, clean up the inside, drill a hole in the far end and put 1 wire through to go to the mag plate where the old condenser would attach, then the other wire to the points; and use silicone gel/caulk to hold the new capacitor in place inside the old can. Should I insulate the wire to the points? Thanks for the help.

You Got it – I use shrink tubing on the condenser {capacitor) wire so it is totally isolated from ground. . . 😀
