I bought a whole pickup load of old outboards from a guy last weekend…..some oddballs that will become swap-meet fodder, and a few OMC’s. On is a surprisingly nice model 4425 Evinrude (a 1948 according to the s/n) that’s really complete and unmolested except for an absolutely ghastly paint job (camo’ed for ice fishing, maybe? Rare & hideously valuable "Christmas Edition"? Yeah, sure…). Has good spark and compression. I’d like to try to start it this weekend, but it would be nice to have an exploded view of the carb, because I’m sure it’s full of glop. Supposedly, it’s a Tillotson MD10.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
JimI say "pardon me" a lot. I had a 20H, then raced open mod sleds.

(Sea Bee, Sea King, etc.) In my opinion, one of the best singles ever built. That Johnson Design rewind starter was used on the OMC Big Twins for years. The Tilotson carburetor picks up fuel for the idle circuit through the tube running down into the high speed nozzle in the venturi. The low speed needle valve adjusts the air so screwing it out leans the idle mixture. That dip tube is easily plugged and will result in a lean mix with the needle valve screwed all the way in. This may be compounded by air leaks around the butterfly valve and ware in the holes the valve shaft rides in. Remove the high speed needle valve before removing the float bowl. This ensures the needle will not be bent pulling off the bowl
If you have to replace the rewind starter spring, use care when assembling the starter spindle into the pulley that you do not put pressure on the equalizer cup. Doing so can dislodge the Equalizer spring from the shoulder of the spindle and cause the pulley to bind. The following illustration is a typical starter and the housing and spring on yours is different. . . 😀
