What’s going on my 1956 5.5 I set the points at 20 tho right between the two marks on stator plate rebuilt carb but when I run motor at full speed it will only run best when high speed needle is almost fully seated what gives should it not be open at least a quarter to 3/4 turn open.
March 24, 2021 at 7:12 pm #234891Well, are you sure the high speed needle is seating properly and not damaged? How about the thick nozzle gasket, is it is place, in good shape? If the nozzle gasket is missing/messed up it will cause the engine to run rich at high speeds…Turning the high speed needle all the way in compensates for the extra fuel leaking into the high speed nozzle well…

March 25, 2021 at 7:46 pm #234987There is a thick little nozzle gasket, almost looks like a squared off donut…Post some pictures if that will help us clarify things for you…

March 28, 2021 at 12:13 pm #235167Ok guys I am at a loss rich condition still persists , I took carb apart looked everything over hi speed needle looks good not bent no wear both seals in place also looked at float level it is good not hanging up nozzle tight thick seal in place not damage I had rebuilt carb I soaked clean blew out I know it was spotless inside however still runs to rich have to run with high speed needle fully closed, oil mixture is 24/1 what else should I look.
March 28, 2021 at 12:56 pm #235175Did you install a new 439071 carb kit or are you using the old parts in it?
It seems the carb is getting too much fuel so I would suspect the float valve might be leaking, especially if the float height is set correctly. If the brass seat was removed, there is a thin sealing washer which must go back in again and the seat must be tight, not snug, to prevent any leaking past the sealing washer. The tip of the needle may be worn or damaged to, along with the surface in the seat it rides on. Any dirt or fibers in the seat area will also cause fuel to leak past. How’s the float? It may be soaked with fuel and be too heavy to close the valve at the desired time.
Can you post some photos of the inside of the carb and bowl?
March 28, 2021 at 2:07 pm #235183Hold the carb upside-down so the float valve is shut and see if you can blow into the gas line – you should not be able to.
