I need to pull the oil seal from the gearcase head & bearing assembly on an Evinrude Fisherman 1962 5.5 hp motor. I don’t have the bridge & bearing puller tools which cost three times more than the assembly itself. My question is: are there other ways to get that seal out without damaging the assembly?

The left edge of the assembly is tapered. The right edge of the assembly has a 1/16″ ridge that might serve as a landing point for a puller tube.
I can fit a long screwdriver onto the back of the seal, but I don’t want to scratch up the inside of the assembly.

December 12, 2022 at 12:10 pm #269928The only problem with using a puller like the one suggested is it’s very easy to break a piece out of the carrier where the seal sits. The carrier doesn’t like being pried against and is made of a brittle cast aluminum which tends to break instead of bend.
‘Gently’ is the magic word. Supporting the outside of the carrier with a hose clamp might help to. Without the dedicated OMC puller, cutting the old seal out using a lathe would be the best option.

December 18, 2022 at 8:07 am #270077Good work! This is a frustrating operation for sure. Using a puller like the one pictured requires doing exactly what you did, using an alternate surface such as the vice to rest the puller on. Like Bill says, resting that puller on the delicate aluminum seal housing will trash it for sure. Glad you got it out relatively quickly.
