Here’s a pic of the location of the wick and its retainer. Only one of the posts will accept it. As for the brass/copper clips, I’ve always wondered if they were really necessary, but always put them on. Don’t forget to put the points retainer clip on as I have done in the past , only to have the point climb up the post, losing contact and almost causing damage.
September 23, 2015 at 1:39 am #24428Thanks Wedgie, that wick holder appeared in a pile of broken coil
chunks when I took them off……. wasn’t sure what that piece
even was at first! Will check tomorrow for the heck of it
and see if my plate is designed to accept the wick holder on
just the one side.Prepare to be boarded!

PUt the spring, so that it is pushing against the casting. Not pushing against the clip.
The clip has a small dot detent on it, that sits into a detent hole in the casting, to "lock" it in place.
September 23, 2015 at 2:54 am #24438Hey guys, the little copper colored clip is known as a ‘continuity’ clip to make sure the electrical system in your mag works properly. Nothing else.
On some sets of replacement points, including newer BRP parts, it may have to be installed from the top instead of from the side to ensure electrical continuity.
September 23, 2015 at 10:48 am #24446Thanks again for bailing me out of deep water…….
besides….. I hate when I have left over parts!Prepare to be boarded!
September 23, 2015 at 1:53 pm #24451The oiler wick/felt, is sometimes not present when the ignition plate is evaluated because it may have disintegrated over the years or someone who has done previous work did not replace it. The oiler wick usually comes in a pack of fresh points or ignition tune up kit. If the present one is still good and appears to be dry, then add couple of drops of a light oil such as 3 in 1 oil or the like.
September 23, 2015 at 5:50 pm #24457Thanks Cajuncook,
Been gone all day, but am heading out to the garage now to
make things "right"!
My wick was gone, but lucky that I found the retainer clip in the
pile of coil pieces!Prepare to be boarded!
September 23, 2015 at 8:10 pm #24463Alcohol prep pads are usually thin felt. They are found in drug stores for people with diabetes. I find them handy to clean up nooks and crannies on old outboard carburetors. They can be folded and trimmed to put in the clamp for cam lubrication. I also use pipe cleaners and "Q" tips a lot . . . 😉
