I have a 1969 Evinrude 9.5 hp that coughs/spits/hiccups while idling, when faster than “start” it runs like a champ. New coils, points, condensers, plugs, rebuilt carburetor, getting frustrated, I think it must be in the carb somewhere, but I’ve had it apart twice and everything looks good. Anyone have thoughts to help?

it could be sniffing it’ own fumes  from a bad lower rubber skirt  in the lower hexaust  housing..  does it idle better  with the cowl off ??

could be dirty carb   ignition issue   link & synck    played  with the  idle mixture  needle  etc…

have your upped the idle a bit  with the side knob

check utubes parts 1 and 2  on full carb cleaning

Thanks for the input. All new ignition parts, new rubber skirt, cowl on/off the same,, low speed needle adjustment and idle setting knob played with, carb rebuilt once and then stripped down again to ensure cleanliness. Don’t understand your “link & synck” comment. Thanks for the youtube references, will look at those now.

link & sync refers to the  picture   9.5 cam adjustment    it matches the mag plate linkage  with the openning of the throttle plate

Thank you crosbyman for the linkage adjustment attachment, I’ll check that when I can  over the next day or two. Did everything as shown in the videos and properly adjusted the float. But, I will also go back and check float adjustment again.

It is easy to get that lync/sync adjustment off on these engines, the roller/cam set up is obscured down low and can get mixed up during carb installation

Did the link&sync adjustment this morning, engine runs so much better; That solved 95% of the low speed problems I had.  Now I need to get it on a boat to do some fine idle adjustment.

It’s good to know we have knowledgeable people on this sight willing to help others; thank you crosbyman and fleetwin for your help.

                      Crosbyman,

I am a past member. I joined when I got into the hobby many years ago, member for 10-12 years. I sold off all my motors except 4 that have sentimental value.  I use the ones I kept on my inflatable dinghy for my sailboat. I value the resources that AOMCI provides and if I was still active in the hobby I’d be a member.

Thank you for your help and enjoy a great organization.

                      Tim
