I own a 1940 Evinrude Elto Handitwin and would like to know where I might purchase replacement inner and outer grease seals for the lower gear box? The entire box leaks out entirely on a typical run of 30 minutes or more.

You’re using grease and not hypoid gear oil, correct?

I use a hypoid gear oil and have never used grease. The original parts diagram for the Handitwin does, however, refer to the inner and outer seals as ‘grease seals’ . Should I be using grease in the lower gear case, instead of the gear oil? Would be nice to find a copy of original owner/user manual and see what grease or oil was used. However, any recommendations or further advice re correct lubricant to use would be greatly appreciated.
          Thanks

One grease that gets recommended often is John Deere cornhead grease. Search for cornhead and you find quite of bit of discussion about it.

Metal shaft Seals weren’t around in the early years. That’s why the motors came with a Heavy Oil or Grease. The Seals they used back then were Asbestos or Cork with a metal cap or aluminum lockwasher pushed in a bore to put pressure on the Drive Shaft and the Prop Shaft. Some Early Outboards used No seals on the Shafts. You can get creative with Cork (Wine bottle) or Graphite Rope Packing which was used for Water or Gas valves for years. IF the motor you are trying to stop the leaking on has the Metal Cap or Aluminum Lockwasher on the Shafts. Good Luck Patience required.
