They were built for the European market in Belgium. My guess is the Amal carb was cheaper to source in Europe and at the time spares were readily available. However they are not anymore and the float bowl leaks but finding a suitable O ring will probably work. No we don’t have the recoil but there are some available on eBay.Yes the rope sheave is bolted to the fly wheel and can be easily removed to reveal the standard flywheel where a recoil will fit.I can see from YouTube that new coils are still available for this and other OMC engines that fit this era but not sure about points and condensers. I can see that when advancing the throttle, the flywheel base rotates and advances the timing, at least I assume it does as I have never noticed this on other small engines apart from Briggs and Stratton where the fan air does as speed increases. One of the transom bracket clamps is missing but probably can be made from threaded bar of some kind. Both spark plugs give a good spark despite multiple cracks in the HT lead insulation. It’s an interesting project but he will be using it on a small inflatable if he can get it going.

Are you in the US yourself? I have a bunch of parts you can have for the shipping, if and when you get it going. I probably have 4 recoils I will never use. The thing is, that is such a unique rope sheave, I am wondering if that’s OEM for that model?

        Long live American manufacturing!

Unfortunately I’m in the UK in deepest darkest Cornwall but thank you for the kind offer. Yes I am confident the rope sheath genuine as it fits like a glove and mounts into the same holes used to pull the flywheel off.Like a lot of things in the UK in those days you were offered the basic model of something or did you want the deluxe. Back then when you guys had cars with trimmed dashboards and electric windows we had painted steel and wind up windows. What carbs were fitted to the US engines?I can’t get my head around how much the timing is moved when increasing the throttle. The Ventura in the carb is tiny, about 8mm . I think it’s well worth restoring as there can’t be many of those particular engines knocking around now.

OK, well like Frank says, perhaps if that top sheath is removed, the conventional recoil will fit. Try removing it and taking more pictures. I would attempt to resurrect that carburetor, I’m sure you can find an oring to fit the bowl. I’m guessing there is a fixed high speed jet somewhere in the bowl/nozzle, that will have to be cleaned out also. I’m guessing the ignition will need to be serviced/overhauled. And, you should probably replace the water pump impeller, and change the gear lube.
            An interesting project for sure.
Take pics of inside the carb with the bowl off, hopefully we can direct you to the fixed high speed jet.
And yes, rotating that throttle handle does indeed advance the ignition timing, unlike fixed timing used on many of the four stroke lawnmower engines. The ignition cam and carb throttle linkage must be syncronized to work properly, but I’m betting it is close enough the way it is to work fine. Not quite sure how it should be set up with that crazy carburetor anyway, so don’t mess with it.

My son got it running today, runs well but he does not know where the cooling water should come out.He loosened the chrome bolt with a fibre washer and lots of water was flowing but I think that was a water drain bolt.

                Fresh water flush plug.

There likely is no dedicated water outlet.  Water is discharged into the exhaust stream and some will blow out in droplets from the exhaust relief ports on the backside, about half way down.  This happens by chance, with most of the water going on down and out the underwater exhaust.

Can’t seem to upload the photo but it’s what you would expect without the pull start fitted.

Well, there is no visible direct outlet for the cooling water on these engines.  But, if you swivel the engine around 180 degrees, you will see a strange cover with four little slots on each side, it is located on the back side of the exhaust housing/tube about six inches above the gearcase joint.  This is the exhaust relief, but you will feel a very fine spray/mist of water coming out of these slots when the engine is running.
