      Hello,

I’ve been working on an Evinrude lightwin 3602E for the past week or so. Got her running and pumping water! One last issue. The starter rope has broken 3 times. After the second time, I replaced it with good rope that I use on all my outboards. It broke a third time. Every time it breaks, it breaks in the exact same place. It breaks right at the end where I tie the knot.  I’m running it through the hole and tying a knot (where my finger is pointing). I can feel that there is a sharp edge on the underside of the hole. I looked on a diagram to see if I was missing a part, but it appears I’m not. My older lightwins have a small metal sleeve that the end of the rope goes through. Any ideas? Thank you!

      Best,

      Todd.

        1.  use proper  cord   not just ” good cord ”   check with  lawnmower shops chainsaw  shops  they have all sizes for starter ropes
        2.  make certain you have the proper size cord …. see picture
        3.  file down any sharp edges
        4.  make a good knot and  apply  crazy glue   or drive a small nail across the knot and crazy glue (carefull with eyes and lungs !!!)
        5. use the proper length  for the engine…..see picture
        6. when done… line up  ARROW HERE section  with the arrow on the left side of picture

Are you threading the rope behind that roll pin?
          I believe it should be.

If you plan on doing more vintage outboards as a hobby, buy a spool of Stens TrueBlue starter rope.   It’s a great quality starter rope.

              Hello,

Yes, I’m threading the rope behind the roll pin. The rope keeps breaking right at the knot. I’ll try filing the hole some more.

              Thank you for your advice!

              Todd

                Hello,

The cord that I’m using is the proper diameter and length. It’s cord made for this exact purpose. I assume I just need to file down the sharp edges more. I was just making sure I wasn’t missing a part of some kind. Thank you!

                Best,

                Todd.

Never pull the rope all the way out to the end on this or any other recoil starter.

And make sure the rope is long enough as well.   A rope that is too short will break in this area as well.
