Dan, right after the Sierra coils changed from Prufex [German made] to Chinese origin, I did a comparative test of both of them on my Stevens machine. Both coils ohm out practically the same. Believe it or not, the Chinese coils would fire with a nice blue spark, with lower amps at the primary than the German coil… i don’t recall how much lower the Stevens meter showed, but it was significant. I was surprised. So electrically speaking, they work great. How long they will last is another question. Of course the laminates are poorly made, as we all know. I have a couple sets of them in service right now, so we will see. The other thing I hate about these is the method in which the coil is secured to the laminates… you can practically push the coil off with your fingers.

Coming off the laminates easily might be a blessing for now. After reading Mumbles other alignment problems are the OMC laminates going to cure all of the problems? He mentioned the coil being too large in diameter? How about the secondary outlet being so long? Of course long wires will be a pain, but fixable. CDI does that on most of their components too. I guess time will tell. I will buy the OMC coils as long as I can.

Thanks for the #’s guys, I don’t want to use the Sierra stuff if at all possible. I bought some while ago and sent it back, no quality there at all!
I’m just getting back into outboards, I’ve been dealing with Inboards the past couple years.
I’ll be asking some more questions I’m sure.
          Thanks,
          John,

            Jerry,

I have found the same thing as you. While I hate the sierra coils, the do throw a better spark for some reason. Again, leads are too long, and laminates don’t line up properly, but the outboards don’t seem to mind that as far as I have seen. I put prufrex in all my own motors, but most guys that come in for repairs want the sierra for the cost savings. But there really isn’t any cost savings when you have to fiddle with them for an hour.
