<!–more–>This Power Pilot controls a 1976 85 hp Evinrude (too big, but it came with the boat).  Momentary choke toggle switch below start key. What is the knob on the front of the control case? Tach plug cover? Adjuster for something inside case?
      Thank you.

        chat gpt.  🙂

On most Evinrude side-mount “pilot” control boxes, the front knob (the small round one facing forward, usually near the base of the handle) is the friction or throttle tension adjustment.

        Its purpose:

        • Tighten it → adds resistance to the control handle so it doesn’t creep back toward idle when running at a steady throttle.

        • Loosen it → makes the handle easier to move for quick speed changes.

It doesn’t change engine power or trim directly — it just controls how freely the throttle lever moves.

If your control also has a pull-out feature on the main handle for neutral warm-up, that’s a separate function — the front knob is still just the friction/tension adjuster.
