I recently found a reproduction handle for my rbm flywheel. The plan is to repair the wheel and then have it nickel plated -or some other type of shiny plating. The first question I have is; How was the original handle fixed to the flywheel? Did it originally have the bolt soldered in or was it fixed another way? I don’t want to start drilling and modifying it until I figure out the strongest way to attach it. Any insight? Also wondering about what type of plating I should put on it and how much it might cost.
      Thanx.

There was threads in the flywheel
when it was new. As you can see there
        aren’t many. Someone probably over
tightened it as some time and pulled
the threads out then soldered it on.
Seems to me to be a difficult repair.
Possibility someone has simple a solution.
        I got nothing.

The starter knob mount on my Koban flywheel needed some work to as sometime in its life it had been brazed back on, really brazed on.

I figured the threads in it were damaged to so I faced the flywheel so I could get the steel insert out and cut some new threads. The new insert was made out of brass hex and was threaded and brazed on the inside to hold it in place.

After some more turning and polishing, it’s now ready for a starter knob.

I don’t know if this procedure would work on your Evinrude but it might be worth a try.

The hole is blind on the Evinrude
and only about 5/16" deep but
it doesn’t have to be. You’ll never
know when the knob is on and the
way these things shake I don’t think
the loss of weight would matter.
Could even make it better. He is
lucky they soldered his on. That
brass on yours would be a real
            problem for someone that doesn’t
have the ability to deal with it as
            you do.

Seems obvious, ship it to mumbles and have him do it. 🙂 Nice work.

Looking at the Evinrude flywheel where the handle threads in, is that plated or a layer of different metal?

Mentioning the obvious: These flywheel knobs are dangerous in several ways. A weakly attached one could fly off and do real damage. I haven’t heard much of outboard flywheels bursting, but creating a weak spot in the rim isn’t going to be a good idea. This might be a case where absolute authenticity should be compromised. Drill and tap for a pivot bolt?

                      I understand the question but…..
If it was so easy then it had already been done successfully……
                      unfortunately, no space left there

how about a flat head and recess it? that will make it flush.
